Bravo Mario

January 9th 2007 10:03
The people of Sydney were recently devastated with the news that well-known restaurant owner and gelato maker, Mario Acquaro, was murdered in broad day-light outside his popular Crows Nest business by a former employee.

31-year-old Gordon Szeto was today charged with one count of murder and will undergo a mental assessment before attending his next hearing on February 6.

As no bail application was made, Szeto will remain in police custody until that date.

Mr Acquaro, known to his customers as simply "MarIo" ran Bravo's Trattoria for over 12 years.

Shocked family, friends and restaurant-goers have left candles, flowers and loving messages for the man who made dinner outings fun again. One message said that Mario can now make "pizza and gelato for everyone in heaven".

For those who have attended the restaurant (and I believe there are very few people in Sydney who haven't), you will know what I'm talking about when I say that it was a pleasure to meet such a charming and charismatic man. His taste in wacky t-shirts was certainly unique and even more so, his love for life.

He will really be missed and my deepest sympathies go out to his family, his fiancee and his beautiful daughter.

Another Prostitute Body Found

December 13th 2006 08:40
Detectives in Ipswich, England are currently facing a race against time as an anonymous serial killer strikes again.

The naked body of a female prostitute was found today in scrubland just a few hundred yards away from Old Felixstowe Road. Her body is the fifth one found in the space of two weeks.

Police are yet to confirm the identities of the last two victims but believe them to be 24-year-old Paula Clennell and 29-year-old Annette Nicholls.

Only a few days ago, Ms Clennell made an appearance on national television speaking out about the earlier murders. She admitted that the horrific news would not deter her from continuing to work the streets because she needed the money but it made her wary about getting into strangers' cars.

She was last seen on Saturday 9 December at 1am in Rendlesham Court.

The police raised awareness of a serial killer targeting the area's prostitutes after the body of 25-year-old Gemma Adams was found on December 2 and just several days later, the body of her 19-year-old friend, Tania Nichol.

Now the murderer has taken the lives of 5 women. Detectives are investigating the matter with urgency so as to put the perpetrator behind bars before he or she strikes again.

Who Killed JonBenet Ramsey?

August 19th 2006 01:42
In late 1996, six-year old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey was found dead in the basement of her parent’s Colorado home. For years, the circumstances surrounding this little girl’s death have remained a mystery. Some believe her parents were involved. Others believe it was the work of a professional killer. Ten years later, a new suspect has been charged but still no one is able to answer the question - Who killed JonBenet Ramsey?

On 26 December 1996, Patsy Ramsey, mother of the tiny beauty queen, was hit with a horrible reality. She had found a ransom note demanding US $118,000 in exchange for her daughter. She reported this to the police and under 8 hours later, her daughter was found dead.

The autopsy report showed that JonBenet had been strangled to death. There was also indication of a fractured skull and possible sexual assault.

The evidence pointed in lots of different directions. Firstly the ransom note was analysed by experts. There were no fingerprints but the writing resembled the handwriting of Patsy Ramsey. Secondly, the note demanded $118,000 which authorities believed was extremely low for a ransom note. Strangely, when police searched the crime scene they found that a bible owned by JonBenet’s father, John Ramsey, had been turned to Psalm 118. Thirdly, footprints were found in the wine cellar near the basement where JonBenet was found. These footprints did not match any of the suspects’ footprints. And finally, there was blood on JonBenet’s underwear that also did not match that of any of the known suspects.

Eventually, forensic investigators were able to establish a DNA profile from the blood samples they obtained. They said the DNA belonged to an unidentified male and when this info was entered into the FBI database, still there was no match.

Throughout the years, JonBenet’s family has maintained that this was the sick work of an outsider. Right up until the end, when Patsy Ramsey died of ovarian cancer on 14 June 2006, she fought to find the person responsible. The Ramseys pleaded with the community on national television to help find their daughter’s killer and hired their own investigators to take on the case.

For some time following the murder, the media was in a frenzy over whether or not the Ramsey’s could do this to their own daughter. But the grand jury never convicted them of any crime and the family won a number of defamation law suits as a result.

Then on 16 August 2006, the media found themselves in a frenzy again. This time it was over a new suspect – John Mark Karr. He was arrested in Bangkok after a string of emails regarding JonBenet’s murder were traced back to him.

On arrest, he allegedly confessed to being with JonBenet when she died but said that it was an accident. However, since his arrest, doubt has been cast over his role in the murder. Karr’s ex-wife has said that she was with him in Alabama at the time, making it impossible for him to be the one responsible.

So who exactly is this man whose face is plastered all over our newspapers and TV screens? He’s a 41-year-old former school teacher who grew up in Alabama. At age 19, he married a 13 year old girl then divorced her 1 year later. At age 24 he married a 16 year old girl. They also divorced 12 years later, when Karr was charged with possession of child pornography.

After being deported from Thailand to US, Karr is now facing charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping and sexual assault of a child.

Did John Karr kill JonBenet Ramsey? We’ll soon find out.

The Xbox Murders

July 26th 2006 10:08
6 people and 2 dogs were found dead in a Deltona apartment in early August 2004. They had been stabbed and beaten to death with baseball bats. Their bodies were mutilated.

What caused this gruesome murder? What sparked this unbelievable waste of innocent human life?

One word.

Xbox.

Microsoft Xbox 360

According to Prosecutors, 27-year-old Troy Victorino was angry with one of his victims, Erin Belanger. She had evicted him from her grandmother’s home and had kept some of his personal belongings including his Xbox video game system.

But instead of requesting for the return of his belongings in a pleasant, gentleman-like manner, he gathered some friends, several baseball bats and indulged in a bloodbath of senseless killings.

Troy Victorino, Michael Salas and Jerome Hunter were recently convicted of first-degree murder. The prosecution are pushing for the death penalty however it is up to the jury to decide whether a life sentence or death by lethal injection is more appropriate. The decision will be made early next week.

This case has made way for public discussion about videogame-related violence. There are some who believe that only those so influenced by the violence in videogames could be capable of committing such heinous crimes. There are others who believe that if Miss Belanger had kept a roll of extra-soft Sorbent toilet paper or a can of Campbell’s chunky tomato soup, the outcome would have still been the same.

I often put forward the argument that videogames are making our children more stupid and aggressive by the minute. So as much as I would love to blame the creators of R-rated videogames for this tragedy, the truth is that in the absence of evidence linking the violent behaviour to the games, these murders can only be put down to the sick individuals who committed the crimes.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is possibly the sickest, most repulsive, stomach-churning court case I have ever encountered.

Katherine Knight, a 37 year old abattoir worker from NSW, has been convicted of the murder of her de facto husband, John Price, and sentenced to life in prison.

Key words. Abattoir worker.

By Keith Richardson
from www.morguefile.com

Ms Knight stabbed Mr Price almost 40 times. She then chopped off his head and made what Justice O’Keefe has called a “sickening stew”. But the brutal mutilation didn’t stop there. Knight then sliced her ex husband’s buttocks, cooked it on the stove and served it with vegetables as a meal for her victim’s children! And the entertainment for the evening? Their dead father's skin hanging from a meat hook in the lounge room...

I have read about violent murders before but nothing as ghastly and repulsive as this. What on earth was this woman thinking? How can anyone be so malicious? So evil? And to expose the poor children to their father’s mutilated, blood-drenched body is just incomprehensible.

The scary thing is that Ms Knight is currently appealing her sentence to the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal. To use the words of Justice Adams, life sentences are generally reserved for “crimes so wicked...there ought to be no prospect of release.” However, Knight’s defence team will be arguing that their client’s borderline personality disorder was not taken into account in the initial sentencing. This means there is a possibility of reducing Knight’s jail sentence, even if she committed a crime so wicked.

Should she be sentenced to life? Should she be given the prospect of release in the future? The decision will be made very soon, though a date is yet to be fixed.

The OC has a Cannibal

June 23rd 2006 08:14
Fan of the OC? The lavish lifestyles, excessive wealth and plastically enhanced Julie Cooper types? Well, here’s a story about the real OC very different from the one you see on TV...

A former school teacher, currently locked up in an Orange County mental ward, has applied to the Supreme Court for an early release. How did he get there in the first place? It’s a sick and twisted story, (even sicker than Julie Cooper getting it on with her daughter’s ex boyfriend) not for the faint hearted.

Albert Fentress murdered a teenage student over 27 years ago. He tied Paul Masters’ body to a post in his basement and sexually mutilated him. And as if that weren’t enough, he then shot the 18 year old twice in the head before cooking parts of his body and eating him. Yes. He ATE his victim. Fentress was found to be insane and was consequently sent to a psychiatric ward.

Now, almost three decades later, he believes he is ready to move up to a non-secure psychiatric unit. His case was supposed to be heard in early July. However, resident psychiatrists protested that Fentress is still suffering from a number of mental conditions and should not be released as of yet.

Meanwhile, all I can do is breathe a huge sigh of relief, turn on the tele and think that Julie Cooper doesn’t seem as screwed up as I thought.

Remember that rumour about the teenage skank who didn't know she was pregnant, had her baby in a Kmart change room, then dumped the child in the bin? Well, if you take out the teenage skank part and the Kmart part and the bin part, it's no rumour at all. It's the real life story of Amy Shorter who was recently convicted of murdering her own newborn baby. How did this mother of three end up committing such a heinous crime? It seems beyond comprehension.

Wal-Mart, Madison Heights, Virginia
from www.wikipedia.com

Ms Shorter was shopping at Wal-Mart one day and began to feel severe abdominal aches. The 27 year old went into a handicapped toilet cubicle and discovered the cause of her pain as she gave birth to a baby girl. It was argued in court that she had no prior knowledge of her pregnancy and the surprise birth caused her to panic to such an extent that she left the newborn in the bathroom and fled the scene.

Wal-Mart employees found the baby and a nurse who was shopping at the outlet at the time attempted to perform CPR. She was taken to hospital but died 5 days later.

Shorter was charged with felony murder as well as malice murder. However, the jury was unable to come to a unanimous decision as to the malice charge and she was only charged with felony murder. Understandable I suppose. How could a mother ever purposefully leave her child in a bathroom to die? Surely she didn't intend on actually killing the baby, right? But then again, how can she have not known that she was pregnant?

Amy Shorter will spend the rest of her life in jail and will only be eligible for parole in the year 2019.

BLOGGER'S MURDER TRIAL

May 22nd 2006 08:27

When I came across this case, I didn’t really know what to think...

Her name is Rachelle Waterman. She’s a 17 year old from Alaska who is a member of her school volleyball team, the Academic Decathlon and the local choir. (Shock: there are sporty, smart AND musical people out there??)

Rachelle Waterman with her father
from www.wikipedia.com

For several years, Rachelle had been keeping a blog of her life. She wrote about her day-to-day activities, interactions with her parents and posted photos of herself. Nothing out of the ordinary. She appeared to be no different to any other girls her age and from the sounds of things, she had a lot going for her.

But unlike most teenagers, Rachelle was on trial for the murder of her mother, Lauri Waterman. (Real point of shock: OHMYGOD, your own mother?? I mean, I don’t think anyone should be killing anyone, but especially not the person who brought you into the world.)

Lauri was abducted, attacked with a blunt object then doused in petrol and set alight in a car. Her daughter was accused of having conspired with two ex-boyfriends Jason Arrant and Brian Radel to carry out the killing. And let’s not forget poor Mr Waterman, father of the accused and husband of the victim. I can’t even begin to imagine how he must have been feeling throughout the trial.

Arrant and Radel testified against Rachelle.(Suspicious, two ex boyfriends, working together?) So did she do it? Many people thought so. But many people thought otherwise. The police seized her computer and used it to search her files and in particular, her blogs, for any evidence relevant to the trial.

The verdict was recently returned in favour of Rachelle. The judge dropped all charges against her. Had she been convicted, Rachelle Waterman would have faced 317 years behind bars.

You gotta feel sorry for the girl. She lost her mum and instead of having time to mourn and grieve that loss, she had to be interrogated, examined and cross-examined, by police, lawyers and the entire world. Sure, she’s had her name cleared, but she will probably always be known as the girl who was on trial for the murder of her own mother. Even worse still, Lauri never wanted her daughter to date either Arrant or Radel. Had Rachelle listened to her mum, maybe she would still be alive today...
