Legal Herald - THE LAW AND YOU

Mick Doohan, The Headbutting Hero

For the average female, headbutting is an extremely perplexing concept. And by “perplexing” I actually mean, ridiculous, illogical and stupid.

Two reasons. Firstly, why on earth would you actively choose to put the one thing that encompasses your brain, your face and essentially, the person that you are, in the path of serious damage? And secondly, if you really want to hurt the guy, doesn’t it make more sense to just go in for the full swing? Really boys, I just don’t get it.

Yet everyone’s doing it. The martial arts people, soccer players and even the Grand Prix motorcycle road racing World Champion, Mick Doohan.

He was recently arrested after doing some Zidane-style headbutting at a Darwin strip club. The 41-year-old was subsequently charged with the assault of the club's bouncer and failure to leave a licensed premises after being told to do so.

Today, The Thunder From Down Under was in court pleading guilty to the charges. Doohan’s lawyer submitted that he was acting completely out of character. He apologised on Doohan’s behalf to the bouncer involved and also to the police and the court for taking up their time.

Magistrate Greg Cavanagh fined the sportsman $2,500 but said that no conviction would be recorded because Doohan is “ a veritable Australian hero”.

I was hoping there would be something in the judgement that explained the whole headbutting concept, but no, there’s was nothing...

I think headbutting is all about the unexpected. No one expects you to headbutt them and that's why it works so well You are also using the hard part of your head (forehead) against all the soft bits on someones face so it does not actually hurt you that much. It's also helpful if you have your hands restrained. I have thought about this way too much

hehe... yes you have jon! Tell me you have never actually head butted someone? I mean, is this something that guys do all the time when they get into fights?? It just looks so ...silly !!

Thanks anyway for the explanation. I'm slightly more understanding of it now, but not entirely convinced.

And Stan, I'm guessing you've had some bad experiences with bouncers??

According to the reports I've read, he actually flung his head back when restrained from behind.

I assume in Stanley's case is that he can't stand some of the poor attitude bouncer's display when on the job. I've come across a few and you would not believe how bloody arrogant they are.

i think the attraction to head butting is that you look really tough. I mean really, it's stupid for all of the reasons you said above, but who would want to fight a guy who obviously doesn’t care about his face? It still hurts like hell too, even if you do get the soft parts of someone’s face, it’s still your head… I think that adds to the toughness…

and, to further bring this home, if you punch someone in the face, you're pretty likely to break the fragile bones in your hand, whereas, if you headbutt properly, you can do maximum damage to someone's face, with very little pain to yourself...

charles, knows where i am coming from!

ms. brunette - yes, let's just say that bouncers aren't as friendly to me in comparison to my more attractive female friends.

i am not a big glasgow kiss fan i prefer the good ol bottom of the palm right up the nose. if you hit it right should splatter the face of the person with blood, while causing major nose breakage! ah, one too many kung fu movies for me!
