Legal Herald - THE LAW AND YOU

Liar Sentenced to 2 years Jail

June 26th 2006 06:54
Everybody lies from time to time. It’s just the way this world seems to work. Even the most honest of us do it. But I guess what matters is the degree to which you lie and the consequences of that lie on those around you. If you go too far, you could hurt someone. You could hurt yourself. You could even end up in jail...

from www.morguefile.com

Heather Faria learnt her lesson the hard way. She was a former high school teacher from Massachusetts who told a lie to family and friends that landed her a 2 year jail sentence. What was it all about ?

It started off as a little lie about not feeling too well. It ended up being a big fat pile of BS about how she had stomach cancer and couldn’t afford to pay for treatment. As a result, her friends and family raised over $50,000 to help their supposedly sick friend.

Now, you’d think at that point, the little voice inside of Faria’s head would have told her how dishonest, shameful and wrong this was. But no, instead, the 27 year old took the money and pretty much went wild. She went on a holiday, a shopping spree, bought herself a widescreen TV and some very expensive jewellery.

I guess the problem with telling one lie is that you have to tell another few to maintain the validity of the first. If you don’t cover every track, you are bound to get caught. Ms Faria’s mistake was telling friends she was receiving treatment from the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. But the Institute announced they had no such patient, and before you knew it Ms Faria was in court explaining herself to a lot of angry people.

Wonder if any of her friends will visit in her in jail...

not quite sure how she thought she would be able to get away with a lie as huge as that!

the human psyche is an interesting thing and how we rationalise things. i think we have all been in positions where we have told a lie and we couldn't tangle ourselves out of it, but yes that is a whopper! she must have some sort of illness. or it was just pure greed? would be interesting to do a psycho-analysis on her.

that's what I thought too! But there's been no mention of any illness on her part so i think she was just going with the flow of her lie and seeing what she could get out of it. I mean, as long as she wasn't getting caught, i guess she thought she was doing pretty well for herself! It's pretty outrageous when you think about it...

hmmm you know the power of human sympathy is a massive thing. the more i think about it the less inclined i am to conclude that it was greed that drove her. just the possible outpouring of love and warmth directed to her so called plight may have been the driving factor. from a superficial reading i think she was just lonely and looking for some affection. i do actually sympathise with her somewhat now. people tend to see things in black and white when it comes to others without seeing the shades of grey. i am not saying for one moment that she doesn't need to be punished but i can feel for her on a certain level.

really? I think there was a lot of greed involved...hence the shopping spree.

cibby - i think greed was both a factor and the residue from the attention. i think it is fair to say that there were massive voids in her life for her to take this path. we can only speculate.

there are massive voids in many people's lives but they just get a dog or a gym membership to fill it, not $50,000!!
