Hollywood Wins Sex, Nudity and Violence Case
July 10th 2006 08:43
I grew up watching wholesome shows like I Dream of Jeannie and The Brady Bunch. Most of my friends on the other hand were out watching anything they wanted, including all forms of violence, sex, nudity, drug use, horror and offensive language. I often argued with my parents telling them that this was the world’s greatest injustice, stamping my foot on the floor and screaming, “But I AM mature enough to watch M-Movies!”
Now that I am older, I understand. I realise that children are impressionable and are very influenced by what they see and hear on television. Take Jamie Bulger’s killers as an extreme example.
Until recently, companies like CleanFlicks and CleanFilms existed to provide ‘sanitized’ versions of Hollywood blockblusters to the public on VHS and DVD. These are the same movies you see on the big screen minus all the sex, nudity, violence and F-words. You’ve probably seen one on the plane and not even realised it.
These companies opened up a door for many parents who had immature children demanding to watch programmes with adult themes. And also for adults who chose not to watch certain concepts on television.
However, as of last week, the companies were made illegal. A US District Court Judge in Colorado ruled that all production, sale and release of edited videos are to cease immediately and any existing copies are to be destroyed. The judge said that editing such movies “injures the creative, artistic expressions” of these copyrighted works.
For Hollywood, this is huge. It means that Directors such as Steven Spielberg and Production Companies such as Paramount, Sony and Universal can keep making and producing movies with whatever content they wish. It all comes down to freedom of expression it seems and that’s fair enough.
But might it not be a good idea to permit legal arrangements between those who create and those who edit so that sanitized versions are still available to those who want them?
Lawyers for the editing companies say the decision will be appealed.

But I don't like watching movies on TV that have been censored, with 'flip' inserted for 'fuck'. The TV station wants to cash in on the popularity of the film, but they don't agree with the content?
that's like when people paint over the genitals in nude paintings...

Anyway Cibbo, if you want to see the real thing with the F words and all, you can get it on DVD and replay it to yourself a hundred times to make up for the lack of it on commercial television
