Celebrity Sex Tapes
June 12th 2006 04:02
Celebrity sex tapes. Why do they do it? Don’t they realise that even if they lock it up and chain it down, somehow, it will get into the hands of someone who is not supposed to have it? Don’t they understand that unless they are Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, those involved will be ultimately humiliated? Don’t they realise that thousands of dollars will be spent on court proceedings to stop its distribution, to clear the names of those allegedly involved, to un-taint their superstar reputations? Singer, songwriter, rapper and producer R. Kelly is no exception.
He will soon be on trial for a number of child pornography charges. It all started with a sex tape released in February 2002. The video was released to the press and before you knew it, Mr I Believe I Can Fly had his wings clipped. The video allegedly portrays Kelly engaging in sexual activities with a minor. It is a crucial piece of evidence that will ultimately determine the singer’s fate.
In criminal cases, either side may request that the viewing of certain evidence be limited to the judge, jurors and lawyers for the case. This will be granted in situations where there is “an overarching public interest” to disallow public viewing of the evidence. Both the prosecution and Kelly’s defence attorneys have made this application on the grounds that the contents of the tape are lewd and vulgar. But Judge Vincent Gaughan has refused, because it is the “crux and the linchpin” of the entire case.
So let me just say this.
Famous people, don’t make a sex tape in the first place, because no matter what, you’ll find yourself in court.
