Legal Herald - THE LAW AND YOU

Bravo Mario

January 9th 2007 10:03
The people of Sydney were recently devastated with the news that well-known restaurant owner and gelato maker, Mario Acquaro, was murdered in broad day-light outside his popular Crows Nest business by a former employee.

31-year-old Gordon Szeto was today charged with one count of murder and will undergo a mental assessment before attending his next hearing on February 6.

As no bail application was made, Szeto will remain in police custody until that date.

Mr Acquaro, known to his customers as simply "MarIo" ran Bravo's Trattoria for over 12 years.

Shocked family, friends and restaurant-goers have left candles, flowers and loving messages for the man who made dinner outings fun again. One message said that Mario can now make "pizza and gelato for everyone in heaven".

For those who have attended the restaurant (and I believe there are very few people in Sydney who haven't), you will know what I'm talking about when I say that it was a pleasure to meet such a charming and charismatic man. His taste in wacky t-shirts was certainly unique and even more so, his love for life.

He will really be missed and my deepest sympathies go out to his family, his fiancee and his beautiful daughter.

When I read the reports of this incident, I couldn't believe my eyes. People were honestly saying" there was a man bending over and stabbing him several times in the chest" For heavens sake why wait and watch for the " several times". Surely, one of those bysanders could have possessed the courage of that guy in the States who threw himself on top of a guy on the rail tracks in a bid to save him from being run over.
What's happened to the so called "Aussie Bloke"
Sleep well sweet Prince, Mario, you will be so sadly missed by us all

You knew him too? His funeral was on today, very sad but comforting at the same time. He was a really fantastic person with so much energy and life and the thing I loved about him most was that he always made me laugh. Judging from the eulogy, he clearly had the ability to make the world laugh too.

I think that sometimes when you are faced with something so horrific (such as a stabbing) your body just becomes so frozen with disbelief that it cannot move even though you know you need to intervene to stop the injustice. Maybe that's what the bystanders were going through. I don't know.

Having said that, I did read one report about a lady who hit the attacker with her handbag and yelled for him to stop but I don't know how true that is. I guess we will have to wait until the court case to find out...

Hi, I am his ex-wife and Paris' mother ( Mario's Daughter).
Mario was a wonderful man and an amazing father. It is true what everyone says and writes about him. With his genuine smile and passion for life he made everyone feel good. He did not deserve to die this way and anyone who knew him personally will agree. He is still sadly missed each and everyday by his family and friends. May a little of Mario's spirit remain in each of us.
Just to clarify things - yes someone close to him hit the man with her bag but unfortunatley, by this time it was too late. If only someone had helped earlier my 9 year old daughter may still have her father !
Thank You for loving Mario.

wow, hi Francine thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. I hope you and the rest of Mario's family and friends are doing well, especially little Paris.

I went back to Bravo's on the day that it reopened to support the crew. They all clearly miss him a lot. and it's so easy to see why. He just had this genuinely jovial air about him all the time - just thinking about it makes me smile.

Do you know if there are any updates with the court case?
