Shopoholic Goes To Jail

June 30th 2006 05:00
Leopard Print Stilettos
from www.morguefile.com

My name is Legally Brunette and I am a shopoholic. It was the softness of cashmere and the roughness of tweed that first got me hooked. And now I am addicted.

I love clothes. And shoes. And bags and perfume and lipstick. I find suede irresistible and lace even more so. On good days, I will buy from the sale rack. On bad days, I will purchase anything that’s baby pink, Escada or faux fur. It’s just the way I am. I can’t help it.

However, as dependent as I may be on my daily shopping fixes, I would never steal to support my habit. I work hard to pay for my indulgences and I guess that’s why Bettie Jean Barachie is going to jail and I am not.

Ms Barachie, a 39 year old compulsive shopper from the US has been charged and convicted of embezzling almost AU$3 million from a credit union for whom she worked in order to support her shopping obsession.

Embezzlement is a statutory offence involving the theft of money by an employee who has access to his or her employer’s bank account. However, it is often distinguished from theft because it takes place before the employer actually has possession of the money.

After accessing her employer’s account, Ms Barachie purchased hundreds of shoes, jackets, books, a swimming pool and even a tractor. She plead guilty to embezzlement and the District Court Judge sentenced her to just over 2 years in prison.

What could be worse than that? Well, Ms Barachie has also been ordered to pay back all the stolen money by selling her purchases on Ebay. I’m so glad I’m not in her fluffy pink shoes. I’m not sure I could part with ANY of my purchases. Ever...

Naked Doctor

June 29th 2006 08:44
A senior surgical doctor at Sydney’s Concord Hospital was recently charged with obscene exposure. Sanjay Warrier sat on a letterbox in Coogee, naked, in broad daylight, flipping it and whipping it and scaring everyone off with it. Surprisingly, charges against him were dismissed because according to Magistrate Brian Moloney, it would not be in the interests of society to convict “ a skilled surgeon” such as Warrier in these circumstances.

Before you start getting all worked up about it like I did, thinking that if the dude was a ventriloquist, a stripper or a used car salesman, then he might not have been let off so easily, it is important to consider the circumstances that the Magistrate was referring to.

As it turns out Warrier is a reputable surgeon whom his colleagues describe as being of high moral integrity. He is a shy, religious, conservative type and it seems it was just plain unfortunate that one fateful day in December 2005, when fellow doctors organised a wild night on the town, Warrier decided to drink alcohol for the very first time...

Consuming relatively the same amounts as his mates, the effects were obviously magnified for the vodka virgin. He was in fact delirious and disoriented when the cops arrested him. In other words, it seems the obscene exposure was out of his control because he was so hammered, pissed, blind, off his nut, I think you get my drift...

Although I am normally all for punishing psychos who get a kick out of exposing themselves, I must say, I entirely concur with the magistrate’s decision in this case.

Warrier is no psycho flasher. He was simply inexperienced in the drinking side of things and the shame he will have to live with is probably enough to deter him from ever doing anything like this ever again. I hope.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is possibly the sickest, most repulsive, stomach-churning court case I have ever encountered.

Katherine Knight, a 37 year old abattoir worker from NSW, has been convicted of the murder of her de facto husband, John Price, and sentenced to life in prison.

Key words. Abattoir worker.

By Keith Richardson
from www.morguefile.com

Ms Knight stabbed Mr Price almost 40 times. She then chopped off his head and made what Justice O’Keefe has called a “sickening stew”. But the brutal mutilation didn’t stop there. Knight then sliced her ex husband’s buttocks, cooked it on the stove and served it with vegetables as a meal for her victim’s children! And the entertainment for the evening? Their dead father's skin hanging from a meat hook in the lounge room...

I have read about violent murders before but nothing as ghastly and repulsive as this. What on earth was this woman thinking? How can anyone be so malicious? So evil? And to expose the poor children to their father’s mutilated, blood-drenched body is just incomprehensible.

The scary thing is that Ms Knight is currently appealing her sentence to the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal. To use the words of Justice Adams, life sentences are generally reserved for “crimes so wicked...there ought to be no prospect of release.” However, Knight’s defence team will be arguing that their client’s borderline personality disorder was not taken into account in the initial sentencing. This means there is a possibility of reducing Knight’s jail sentence, even if she committed a crime so wicked.

Should she be sentenced to life? Should she be given the prospect of release in the future? The decision will be made very soon, though a date is yet to be fixed.

She was a Guess model, the 1993 Playmate of the Year and a Reality TV star. She was rising to fame at the speed of lightening thanks to her Marilyn Monroe-like looks, voluptuous figure and flirtatious charm. But then she smooched this cadaver in public and people everywhere started gagging.

Liar Sentenced to 2 years Jail

June 26th 2006 06:54
Everybody lies from time to time. It’s just the way this world seems to work. Even the most honest of us do it. But I guess what matters is the degree to which you lie and the consequences of that lie on those around you. If you go too far, you could hurt someone. You could hurt yourself. You could even end up in jail...

The OC has a Cannibal

June 23rd 2006 08:14
Fan of the OC? The lavish lifestyles, excessive wealth and plastically enhanced Julie Cooper types? Well, here’s a story about the real OC very different from the one you see on TV...

A former school teacher, currently locked up in an Orange County mental ward, has applied to the Supreme Court for an early release. How did he get there in the first place? It’s a sick and twisted story, (even sicker than Julie Cooper getting it on with her daughter’s ex boyfriend) not for the faint hearted.

Remember that rumour about the teenage skank who didn't know she was pregnant, had her baby in a Kmart change room, then dumped the child in the bin? Well, if you take out the teenage skank part and the Kmart part and the bin part, it's no rumour at all. It's the real life story of Amy Shorter who was recently convicted of murdering her own newborn baby. How did this mother of three end up committing such a heinous crime? It seems beyond comprehension.

Kate Moss Escapes Drug Charges

Kate Moss
from www.wikipedia.com

In September 2005, the British tabloids released pictures of supermodel Kate Moss allegedly snorting cocaine at a London music studio. They called her Cocaine Kate and before you knew it, the entire world did too. She issued a public apology for her behaviour and paid a visit to a rehab clinic in Arizona soon after the pics were made public. But a recent announcement by British prosecutors has indicated that no charges will be laid against the 32 year old mum, despite the evidence.

Kitten Cruelty Case

June 15th 2006 09:18
from www.wikipedia.com

I’m no animal lover. In fact, I’m terrified of them. Yes, even that cute, little, harmless looking kitty in the photo. But despite my irrational fear and unfounded hatred, I do believe that all creatures great and small should be treated respectfully. After all, they are living and breathing, just like you and me. They can feel what we feel, including pain and suffering. That’s why the decision handed down today in a Sydney Local Court regarding severe animal cruelty is an important one.

Sir Paul McCartney, from www.wikipedia.com
The soon to be ex-wife of Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney will be suing a British newspaper for publishing a story about her being a prostitute. Heather Mills denies there is any truth to the story and will be taking the matter to court on the grounds that the statements made were defamatory.

What exactly were the contents of this controversial article? According to News of The World, one of England’s top-selling Sunday papers, the former model was a high class prostitute for some of the world’s wealthiest businessmen. The paper claims that in her 20’s, Heather Mills was paid thousands of pounds a night to service well-known clientele including Adnan Khashoggi, a Saudi Arabian arms dealer. Furthermore, pictures from a 1988 German publication were also released, portraying the 38 year old in what the paper calls “obscene and pornographic” positions.

from www.morguefile.com

On Tuesday May 9, 6 out of 7 judges of the High Court of Australia ruled that children born with severe disabilities do not have the right to make compensation claims for ‘wrongful life’. In simple terms, ‘wrongful life’ claims are about suing doctors in negligence, not for the injuries sustained but for being born.

What is Pro Bono ?

June 7th 2006 08:24
from www.morguefile.com

No No No. As a friend of mine once said, we're not talking about the lead singer of U2 here. The term “pro bono” is derived from the Latin word “pro bono publico” which means for the public good. Lawyers who provide legal assistance and advice for free or at a reduced cost are said to engage in pro bono work. But the definition is the subject of much debate in the legal world where the term can mean different things to different people.

President Bush has backed a resolution that same sex marriages be banned in the United States. He plans on doing this by means of a proposed constitutional amendment. Apparently, the idea was put into his head by Senator Allard, a Republican of Colorado. So what does this mean for the estimated 10% of Americans who are homosexuals and intend on marrying a person of the same sex?
